General Summary: Provide exceptional health care services to students, daycare children, faculty, and staff while ensuring compliance with Federal and State laws as well as the WI Nurse Practice Act. Work collaboratively towards maintenance of good health and disease prevention, and promoting a positive school culture that is inclusive and responsive to all members of the school community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Provide short term care for the USM population with acute injures, illnesses, or crisis interventions such as flu, cold, RSV, COVID, etc.
• Provide long term care for those with chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, etc.
• Administer medications as directed by the orders received, and maintain all medications in a safe and competent way.
• Perform medical procedures as necessary within the school nurse scope of practice, and obtain medical orders and education when necessary to implement them.
• Provide healthcare education to students, parents, school employees, families, and communities to improve their medical status or to stabilize them.
• Counsel the USM school population on social-emotional issues.
• Identify, recommend, and refer students and employees that require external school support services, whether for social-emotional issues or other health problems. Collaborate with school counselors if appropriate in these situations.
• Maintain health and medical documentation and records on the School’s electronic medical record system.
• Monitor compliance of the school health program with Federal, State, and Local laws, regulations and policies.
• Support the implementation of the school nursing program and other curriculums designed to promote the wellness and development of students.
• Assist in the development and implementation of programs and services intended to build a healthy school climate for all members of the school community.
• Serves as a resource by providing education and guidance on relevant health and wellness topics to students, parents, and employees.
• Educate and train all appropriate employees on emergency medication administration, emergency procedures and student health plans per applicable laws and policies to delegate.
• Communicates with parents on health needs of students.
• Coordinate education, emergency drills and updates with members of the M-Teams in order to support USM’s Heart Safe School Certification and the safety of the school community.
• Respond and manage crises.
• Monitor immunization records and complete the state report on compliance annually.
• Work closely with the health department, as well as the USM medical advisor on reporting and monitoring communicable diseases, asking questions, and other issues.
• Plan and coordinate with outside agencies to provide vaccination clinics for the school community.
• Work collaboratively on school committees and departments as they relate to health services, policies, community health, and other relevant areas.
• Update standing orders and policies on a regular basis, or according to the overseeing law.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Strong knowledge of medical disorders, treatment, and basic emergency care
• Excellent critical thinking skills
• Ability to understand developmental levels of students, and approach them appropriately
• Strong assessment skills across age and developmental spectrum
• Working knowledge of Federal, State, and Local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services
• Ability to work year-round
• Strong interpersonal skills; capable of using tact and diplomacy in dealing with others
• High level of maturity, confidentiality, assertiveness and independence
• Capable of competently operating technology

Education and Experience:
• Bachelors of Science Degree in Nursing
• Active nursing license
• Current CPR/AED Certification
• At least 2-5 years’ pediatric nursing experience, and/or school nursing experience.
