The Educational Sign Language Interpreter is vital in facilitating effective communication between deaf or hard-of-hearing students and their teachers, staff, and peers. Primary responsibilities include providing accurate sign language interpretation, ensuring equal access to education, and supporting inclusive learning environments. Duties: Provide sign language interpretation: ● Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) or other appropriate sign systems for deaf or hard-of-hearing students. ● Transliterate signed messages into spoken language for teachers, staff, and peers. ● Ensure clear and accurate communication between all parties involved. ● Adapt interpreting techniques and strategies to accommodate individual student needs. Support classroom instruction: ● Collaborate with teachers to provide effective communication support during lessons, discussions, and educational activities. ● Assist students in understanding and conveying academic concepts, instructions, and materials. ● Facilitate communication between students and their peers to foster inclusive classroom environments. ● Help students access and comprehend multimedia presentations, videos, and other audio-visual materials. Foster inclusive and supportive environments: ● Advocate for the inclusion and equal access of deaf or hard-of-hearing students within the school community. ● Promote a positive and respectful atmosphere that values diversity and embraces students' cultural and linguistic backgrounds. ● Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and other educational professionals to ensure an inclusive learning environment. Maintain professional standards: ● Uphold confidentiality and adhere to ethical guidelines for sign language interpreters. ● Engage in continuous professional development to enhance knowledge and skills in sign language interpreting and educational practices. ● Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and best practices in special education and sign language interpreting.
● Associates degree in or Bachlors degree in Sign Language Interpreting ● Pass all relevant national and written performance evaluations to qualify for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Licensure. ● Have or be eligible for a Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction Sign Language Interpreter License number 0020.Certification from a recognized interpreting program (e.g., Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf - RID). ● Proficient in American Sign Language (ASL) and knowledgeable in various sign systems used in educational settings. ● Experience interpreting for deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals in educational or similar environments is preferred. ● Understanding of K-12 education systems and familiarity with educational terminology. ● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with students, teachers, and other professionals. ● Excellent communication and linguistic skills, with the ability to convey meaning accurately and concisely in sign and spoken language. ● Cultural competency and sensitivity towards the experiences and needs of the deaf or hard-of-hearing community. ● Familiarity with assistive technology and tools used in educational settings, such as FM systems or video relay services, is preferred.
